    SUNGRABBER PTY LTD is a small business employing approximately forty people manufacturing alternative energy products: solar panels, hot water systems, wind generators and so forth.
     
    Rob Redman is the owner-manager who began building his own equipment nine years ago while on Long Service Leave from TAFE where he was a teacher in the metal fabrication area.
     
    The products had filled a market need and his enterprise had grown steadily in both volume and range of products to its present structure and size (refer to the organisational chart).
     
    Employees had been recruited in an ad-hoc approach as needs had arisen.
     
    Recognising his need to develop his business and management skills, Rob had undertaken studies at his old TAFE Institute. Amongst other skills, he had learned of the need for sound planning and organisation. Rob had therefore embarked on an analysis of his company’s goals, how it was achieving them, and the utilisation of its human resources.
     
    From the initial study of his company’s operations, Rob had gone on to develop a moderate strategic plan for Sungrabber. This he based on the results of a SWOT analysis he had completed in conjunction with his management studies.
     
    Rob had been the driving force in the enterprise and had endeavoured to continue his designed and development work whilst managing the company. He was hopelessly overworked.
     
    Part of Rob’s strategic planning for Sungrabber provides for him to be able to ease his workload and concentrate on his primary interest - developing new products while still keeping general control of the company.
     
    A couple of recent retirements have given the opportunity to implement key changes emerging from his HR planning exercise. While needing to fill these positions, central to his HR plan was recruiting a person for the position of Production Manager. He also wanted to recruit a person to perform the range of functions associated with HRM, OH&S, IR, as well as Recruitment and Selection.     There are four positions in total at Sungrabber that Rob needs to fill.
